Suzhou Pingtan is a traditional Chinese opera originating from Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, known for its melodic tunes, storytelling, and expressive performances. The objective of this study was to explore the transmission process of Suzhou Pingtan Chinese Opera in Jiangsu, China, and its impact on education and literacy. This study utilizes a combination of fieldwork, interviews, and questionnaires as research tools were used to gather data from three key informants, two main informants, and three general informants. The data collected are analyzed through qualitative methods, including content analysis and thematic analysis. The research findings reveal ten main modes of transmission, including the inclusion of Suzhou Pingtan in the national intangible cultural heritage list, the establishment of inheritors, the Suzhou Pingtan Art Festival, the enhancement of performance level and frequency, the development of Suzhou Pingtan School, the establishment of Suzhou Pingtan Museum, the expansion of performance venues, the integration into primary and secondary schools and universities, international transmission, and strong government support. The study suggests the importance of continued support for educational initiatives, the preservation of performance venues, and the cultivation of young audiences to ensure the sustainability and wider appreciation of Suzhou Pingtan.

This work aims to explore whether students' learning outcomes in the virtual museum (VM) 's "Life and Science course" are influenced by the type of knowledge and the different levels of interaction within the museum. The study was conducted using an eye-movement experimental method, based on cognitive load theory, knowledge visualisation and connectionist theory, to construct a virtual museum interaction hierarchy index to identify high and low levels of interaction in the experimental material. A randomised two-factor experiment was organised to obtain eye-movement related indicators and to analyse statistical data in conjunction with retention test scores and transfer test scores, taking into account the influence of the perceived difficulty of the learning material and the level of mental effort of the students on the experiment. This study will provide effective suggestions for museum learning design and resource development, ultimately offer insights in exploring the most suitable learning rules and learning material selection for VM learners.

Military Families and the Arts is an ArcGIS StoryMaps collection that serves military families by mapping art museums and arts centers located near active-duty military installations. The interactive maps are organized by military branch and browsable by an alphabetical list of active-duty military installations. The ArcGIS StoryMaps collection serves three primary functions: to assist military spouses pursuing a career in the arts with finding a comprehensive list of potential employers, to assist military dependents with finding arts-related opportunities to network into their current or new communities, and to assist military families with finding art-related activities near their military installation in the continental United States.

The pedagogies of fostering possibility thinking (PT) have been investigated for over a decade in early year and primary settings. This paper reports the findings of a qualitative study that sought to identify the teachers' pedagogical practices that foster children's (aged 9-10) PT through alternative resources of learning such as museums in Cyprus. Eight primary teachers took part, and the findings were compared with the existing PT literature which offers an in-depth investigation of the pedagogical features nurturing PT (time, space, learner's agency, standing back and forward). The analysis also suggests a new pedagogy (narrative improvisation) that teachers started using after the museum visit. The study provides a starting point for further research on the aspirations of pedagogies fostering PT using alternative resources of learning such as museum spaces. This paper presents the key findings of the study through a figure and ends with suggestions for further research.

Place has long been noticed, made, developed, and narrativized in favor of settler majorities' economies and hegemonies. Disregarding Indigenous presence and land, the terror on the land continues in the form of dislocation and dispossession of Indigenous, Black, and other minoritized communities of color, along with racial segregation and alienation. Drawing on the scholarship of land-based and decolonizing education, this article provides the conceptual groundwork for a form of art education theory and practice concerned with place-based social justice and equity. Particularly, I propose land-based art inquiry as a decolonizing pedagogy that helps critically assess settler colonial ways of sharing and making place via spatial-temporal injustice and the normalization of settler colonial logics that pervade our daily lives. The art inquiry generates new and critical ways to engage with the land as a site of art and museum (educational) practice as exemplified in the three different sites--a graduate students' collaborative art-based project, a contemporary artist's praxis, and museum praxis. Graduate students' site-specific installation and contemporary artist JeeYeun Lee's mobile walking are artistic interventions to public places that critique settler narratives and re-story the place. They highlight the ways in which land-based art inquiry can help individuals (re)connect with and (un)learn the stories and politics of their relationships to the land, thus troubling the settler colonial territorial imperatives. Also, by bringing land-based art inquiry into the investigation of the museum as another settler colonial place seeks and brings understanding of contemporary Indigenous-led collaborative museum spatial design and (educational) praxis for decolonizing possibilities.

This article is drawn from a 2022 National Art Education Association Convention panel sponsored by the Professional Learning Through Research working group, showcasing various collaborative research projects across multiple divisions in art education (Bain & Vanderlip Taylor, 2022). Collaborative research practices are evolving, moving away from traditional academic scholarly hierarchical structures. This article highlights how three research groups enacted collaborative research: one representing a higher education collaboration, one situated across museums, and one that features a group of graduate art education students. Borim Song and Kyungeun Lim, two higher education professors, describe how their online studio instruction informs and intersects with their collaborative research practice. Next, museum educators Hannah D. Heller, Michelle Antonisse, and Amanda Tobin Ripley explore questions about how Whiteness played out in teaching experiences within their museums. The final group consists of five graduate students who examined the equity, diversity, and inclusion (ED&I) needs of Texas K-12 art teachers, which influenced their development of various ED&I curricular resources.

Play Africa, with over 40 innovative exhibits and/or programs since inception, was created as a means to address the inequalities and lack of high-quality experiences that affect the early development of children from birth to age 10 in South Africa. The results from the 2021 Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) paint a dire picture: 81% of children are unable to read for meaning. Thus, the foundation children need to thrive and meet growth milestones is stifled, creating a ripple effect of disadvantage. Furthermore, a lot of children do not have access to safe spaces to play. Play Africa is trying to change this narrative by making holistic learning fun and accessible. To create safe environments where children can play, create, discover, and connect with one another, Play Africa created the first children's museum and education makerspace in Southern Africa. Agency is a core pedagogical goal of the maker education movement. However, there are still many unknowns about how agency is identified in maker settings. To document maker educator professional visions of agency, we conducted video-cued interviews with eleven U.S-based maker educators using video clips of families making in a drop-in cardboard-focused museum makerspace. We found that heterogenous professional visions of agency are in use within the maker education field, falling across for distinct themes: agency as "open-endedness," agency as "progressive development," agency as "pursuing-own-ideas," and agency as "authority." Depending on which of these lenses was foregrounded during video-cued reflections, maker educators interpreted the same video-recorded moments as evidence for and against maker agency. Further, these competing visions held different underlying assumptions about power in makerspace interactions. This documentation of heterogeneity indicates the complexity of agency as a maker pedagogical goal, makes a case that researchers should adopt multiple perspectives when conducting video-based microgenetic analyses, and raises questions about how to grapple with and mitigate inequitable power dynamics in makerspaces.

There are relatively few studies examining cooperative learning during laboratory activities in a science museum. This study aims to explore such activities to better understand the nature of cooperative learning, if any, in that setting. The participants in this study were 60 fourth-grade students who visited a science museum lab as part of a school field trip. The students, divided into 12 groups, were videotaped and audio-recorded during group work consisting of balancing a scale. Our inductive data analysis of the observations revealed that although each group's interactions were distinctive, common themes emerged. Moreover, even though the group work required cooperative learning, students did not engage in such. Students mostly instructed each other on how to operate the scale, with no scientific explanations. As the students did not know how to work together in order to solve the task, frustration abounded. This research adds to the body of knowledge about lab activities in science museum and offer practical implication to design more effective activities in these settings. Careful pedagogy and thoughtful facilitation can contribute to the students' learning outcomes; therefore, educators should consider the following: ensuring students have sufficient prior knowledge, having the museum educator play the role of a mediator, taking steps to reduce the level of student frustration, and planning additional activities that promote the learning outcomes of the activity.

Models of education that we find in city museums in Austria bear the danger of avoiding discussing the Nazi past. But on the other hand, there is potential in the freedom of being about to skirt it. The lack of pressure to address the topic can lead to a more open approach in discussions, but the ease with which the topic can be avoided is dangerous. Museum spaces between leisure and learning bear the potential to implement open learning models that are, similar to social research, oriented more towards processes and the development of questions than the transmission of already fixed content. Following the approach of research-oriented learning in my own practice at the City Museum of Linz (the city where Hitler and Eichmann grew up), I discuss its challenges, especially in regard to experiences of antisemitism and racism-based forms of exclusions. I use my own learning process as research to suggest methodological developments that allow addressing the issues of antisemitism and the experiences of exclusions in a multidirectional, open, and sensitive way.

This paper presents the results of a collaborative study highlighting the pedagogical approaches used by faculty during visits to the Musée acadien de l'Université de Moncton (MAUM). This qualitative-based study was conducted with a sample of nine participants representing various disciplines from three major faculties. Thematic analysis revealed the main themes related to the pedagogical practices used by the participants: teaching and learning models, pedagogical approaches, and methods. The results indicate that the faculty preferred collaborative, project-based, experiential, and inter- and trans-disciplinary approaches. This study initiated discussions among professors about teaching practices used by faculty members during distance learning. Innovative thoughts have emerged from e-learning practices used by faculty during the Covid-19 pandemic. Feedback from students contributed greatly to enriching and evolving the approaches. The cross-referencing of the results has made it possible to identify tools for inspiring pedagogical approaches, whatever the subject being taught.

With the renovation of the building and the redesign of the Wien Museum's (the City Museum of Vienna) permanent exhibition, the Nazi period is now finally being told as part of the city's history after decades of neglect. The education department was thus faced with the task of including these important and multifaceted topics in our educational programs while still carrying out our everyday work. Based mainly on conversations with experts we distilled five insights that guide our programs: (1) engaging with the students' lifeworld, (2) working with biographies, (3) covering multiple perspectives, (4) highlighting personal agency within a totalitarian system, and (5) connecting to local sites. After discussing each of these principles, this article explains how we implemented them in our work, using two examples, namely a two-hour school program and a school project lasting several months.

This article describes the state of museum education in Ukrainian museums after the Russian armed invasion. The research was based on interviews with museum workers from five cities in Ukraine. Museums represent different regions of Ukraine and museums of different directions. The author analyzes what changes have taken place in educational work during the last two years.

While prior research has demonstrated the importance of narratives as tools for young children's science learning, limited research has considered how narratives can be integrated into the design of science learning environments to support opportunities for children to engage in science practices. We designed four [approximately] 30-minute preschool science programs for museum settings built around narratives from children's science storybooks. Video-data was gathered for three to four iterations of each program with preschool-age children (3-to-5 years) at a small children's science museum and local preschools. Using conjecture mapping as our analytic framework, we found that story-driven programs provided children with opportunities to co-construct evidence-based explanations as mediated by verbal and gestured discourse, engagement in investigation of science phenomena, and generation of representations. Importantly, results suggest that while elements of the storybooks' narrative (structure, events, and agency) supported children's co-construction of explanations, the stronger influence on children's explanations was through the way the storybook's phenomenon was integrated into the program. These findings can help educators better understand the role narratives may play in young children's science learning.

Striking weight biases emerge early in development, yet cognitive-developmental research has largely ignored weight as a social characteristic of interest. How do children conceive of weight? In particular, do children hold essentialist views of weight (i.e. do they view weight as natural, stable, inductively meaningful, and reflective of people's insides) as they do of so many other social characteristics? We conducted an exploratory investigation of children's weight essentialism across two studies. In total, 356 participants (280 4- to 11-year-old children and 76 adults from the United States, mostly White and from middle- to high-income families) participated in three tasks, respectively assessing three dimensions of essentialism of social categories: Beliefs about weight stability, heritability, and inductive potential despite transformation. Results revealed that children viewed weight as stable (similarly so to race) and informative of someone's food choices, but they did not view it as biologically- or genetically-determined. Thus, children may not view weight as reflecting people's biological nature (biological essentialism), but they may view weight as reflecting people's stable personal character (moral essentialism) - a view which is also highly compatible with weight bias, unlike biological essentialism. Children also demonstrated stronger essentialist views of lightness than heaviness across tasks, though essentialism of heaviness increased over development. Findings are discussed as they relate to early conceptions of weight and weight bias. Implications for conceptualizations and measurement of essentialism are also discussed.

The term social participation is widely used and has various meanings in different contexts. This article aims to enhance the understanding of social participation in science museums. The research was conducted using a cultural-historical perspective in six steps: (1) survey to identify the meanings attributed to the term social participation and actions considered participatory in Brazilian science museums; (2) content analysis with coding; (3) literature review on social participation meanings; (4) analysis and revision of categories; (5) survey for educators from Brazilian science museums to validate the dimensions emerged in the first survey; (6) final analysis: synthesis of the dimensions of social participation and proposal of a model. As a result, we recognized five dimensions that contribute to the concept of social participation in science museums: "access"--removing barriers to participation that promote social exclusion; "identity and diversity"--creating a multicultural space that examines and redefines oppressive and unequal relationships; "co-creation and authorship"--fostering different forms of collaboration with audiences; "interaction and dialogue"--expanding opportunities for interaction with exhibitions; "exercise of citizenship"--empowering the audiences to participate in social change. Although these dimensions provide insights into social participation in science museums, limitations exist. These dimensions can contribute to developing museum practices that dialogue with communities and strengthen social participation in science museums.

Many museums deal with socio-scientific issues--meaning topics with multiple perspectives and ongoing research, such as climate change, vaccinations, or livestock farming. As important and trusted sources of science education, museums can play a critical role in raising awareness about such issues. They tend to highlight the various perspectives on the topic and thereby are able to provide a balanced and impartial information presentation. Visitors are therefore confronted both with views that correspond to their own beliefs and with views that contradict their beliefs and are supported in developing an informed opinion on the respective topic. In our study, we used an experimental exhibition on the topic "animal husbandry" to investigate the extent to which, first, an exhibition visit in general and, second, how different picture captions affect knowledge acquisition and interest. We chose a between-subjects design with the factor conflict framing through picture captions. Whereas one group visited an exhibition in which the picture captions were formulated neutrally, another group read picture captions that emphasized the existing conflict. A control group, which did not visit the exhibition at all, allowed us to examine the general effect of the exhibition. As dependent variables, we chose interest and knowledge acquisition as common instruments of educational visitor research. However, we went one step further and used an innovative instrument: visitors' argument repertoire. We found that visiting the exhibition led to higher interest, knowledge acquisition, and a more balanced argument repertoire. Varying the captions had no significant effect. Implications and limitations are discussed.

Narratives, or stories, are used every day by people as a way of making sense of and communicating events in the world. Narratives can be highly useful as a learning tool in science education. Though research on narrative-based pedagogy in science education and communication is very common, most of that research was done in formal settings. Our study followed fourth-grade students who visited the science museum on a field trip, entitled "The Life of Leonardo Da Vinci," which used narrative-based pedagogy (e.g. the story of Leonardo da Vinci) as a common thread throughout the visit. Interviewing the students after the visit revealed that most students remembered facts mentioned in the narrative, and the narrative had a long-term effect. The students remembered this visit better than other visits. In addition, more than half of the students used vocabulary that could be associated with the visit. This study supports the idea that art-based research methods can be effective. Using photos and images proved to be more engaging for students, and all students used the photos of exhibits and other images to create their own stories.

The relationships between museums and schools have been strengthened in recent years but little previous research has studied the activities that museums offer for children from 0 to 6. The present article analyses the role of early childhood education in museums' programs in Catalonia. A total of 118 museums and 296 activities have been analyzed and categorized. Results show that the activities that museums offer for early childhood education schools are limited. Guided visits and workshops are the most representative activities, and the majority of them are focused on the age range from 3 to 6. Future studies can deep in the age range from 0 to 3 in order to improve the relationships between early childhood education and museums.

Australian Holocaust museums are at a crossroads regarding their exhibitions and educational programming. Originally survivor driven initiatives, they now face the dual challenge of negotiating the loss of the survivor generation and interpreting the goals of Holocaust education in light of their absence. To do so, they must confront the question of what Holocaust education seeks to achieve and, most poignantly, whether it can continue to speak to succeeding generations of Australian student and general visitors, now far removed from the event both historically and geographically. This article examines how this moment of intergenerational change has and is being negotiated at the Sydney Jewish Museum through reflection on the development and implementation of its newest permanent exhibition, "The Holocaust and Human Rights." An explicit attempt to bring the intimate histories of the survivors into dialogue with broader, more universalistic concerns, the exhibition provides a microcosm of both the potential and problematics such ventures entail.

Several ethnic groups in Thailand consider themselves oppressed; arguably, Thai society lacks suitable platforms for multiple voices and perspectives. "Vivid Ethnicity," a mobile museum constituted by Mahidol University, addresses this issue. Adapting Kenneth Burke's concept of the "dramatistic pentad," communication theory, and the concept of transformative learning developed by Jack Mezirow, "Vivid Ethnicity" creates a theory of exhibition geared toward critical thinking and creative praxis. Ethnographic performances combined with participatory workshops are shown to be key factors in opening up conversations and encouraging audience to construct their own meaning.

Amsterdam's National Holocaust Museum is due to open in March 2024. It is the first and only museum to tell the story of the attempt by the Nazis to eradicate Jews from the Netherlands, a history of segregation, persecution, and murder. Yet the story is also one of rescue, survival, and solidarity. One of the museum's main goals is to engage visitors by involving them in a learning experience, in particular, to encourage young people to study and to develop the skills they need to be able to understand the past, to see how this impacts the present, and to recognize and challenge discrimination and antisemitism today. This article begins by sketching the presentation in the new museum and examines how the museum's educational facilities (presentation and programs) encourage audiences to think about what they can do to combat discrimination in general, and antisemitism in particular.

University research labs focusing on education, psychology, and cognitive development have been collaborating with museums more and more over the past decade. Nevertheless, cognitive science labs that primarily engage in basic as opposed to applied research may find it difficult to entice museums to collaborate, and existing collaborations may fall short of their full potential to garner benefits to labs and museums alike. Here, we focus on a kind of lab and museum collaboration that has common content, philosophy, and programming and impacts both scientific theory development and museum practice. By illustrating one example of a collaboration between the Lab for the Developing Mind at New York University and the National Museum of Mathematics in New York City, we offer practical tips and suggestions for other cognitive science labs aiming to achieve strong lab-museum synergy.

Using historical thinking for analyzing the teaching and learning of secondary school history, this paper contributes to literature and debates on the pedagogical potential of museums in this endeavor. Despite the existence of museums and expansive literature on their historical significance in various world settings, there has not been much effort to connect history teaching and learning to this institution. Drawing our arguments from literature on historical thinking and museum studies, we explore the value of museums in the teaching and learning of secondary school history. We commend the inherent value in museums if their educational programs are packaged effectively for this purpose. Apart from connecting learners to cognitive activities as well as fostering an understanding and application of its disciplinary competencies, museums also engage with elements of historical thinking. Disciplinary competencies of history include critical thinking, extrapolation, evaluation of sources and detection of bias. Elements of historical thinking which makes museums stand out as potentially significant in secondary school pedagogy are empathy, historical significance, primary source evidence, cause and consequence and continuity and change. However, despite their esteemed pedagogical value, operationalizing teaching and learning of history using various museums facilities comes with several challenges which include high cost of organizing lessons, a strain on the school timetable, complexities associated with logistical and legal demands of out of school visits. Nonetheless, several innovations can be used to deal with such challenges.

This study examines learner experiences in the Museum of Instructional Design (MID), a 3D Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) developed using Mozilla Spoke and Hubs, focusing on Instructional Design and Technology (IDT) education. The MID utilizes a museum theme as a fundamental design element and allows learners to interact, converse, and develop exhibits to represent the IDT field. Leveraging a multi-phase, multi-method approach, we analyzed the usability and learner experiences within the MID, gathering data via expert evaluations and student interviews. The results highlight the engaging and immersive nature of the MID, while also addressing the technical challenges and varying levels of comfort with technology among learners. The study further proposes several recommendations for course design in 3D immersive environments, underscoring the importance of learner autonomy, clear expectations, tiered challenges, and responsive instruction. The implications of these findings emphasize the potential of 3D VLEs in transforming IDT education and other fields.

This study explored the effects of a self-adapted mobile concept mapping-based problem-posing (CMPP) approach applied in a virtual museum context. To investigate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, a quasi-experimental design was applied to compare the critical thinking tendency, meta-cognition tendency, problem-solving tendency, computational tendency, cognitive load, and flow experience of college level students using the self-adapted mobile CMPP approach to those using the conventional mobile-based problem-posing and points-listing approach. A total of 56 university students from two classes were involved in the experiment. The two classes of students adopted different approaches to learning in the virtual museum for comparing their critical thinking tendency, meta-cognition tendency, problem-solving tendency, and computational tendency as well as flow experience and cognitive load. One class with 29 students was the experiment group adopting the self-adapted mobile CMPP approach, while the other class with 27 students was the control group using the conventional mobile-based learning approach. The results of the study showed that the proposed strategy could significantly improve learners' critical thinking tendency, meta-cognition tendency, problem-solving tendency, and computational tendency compared to the conventional approach. Though the proposed approach raised slightly higher flow experience and cognitive load, there was no significant difference between the flow experience and the cognitive load of the proposed approach and that of the control group. The interview results complemented the experimental results and indicated that the proposed approach was effective in terms of developing learners' thinking capability, knowledge construction, and self-learning capability.

This article investigated the multifaceted role of artists in educational programmes, focusing on the challenges they face while balancing their identity as artist-teacher, artist teacher, artist-educator, and artist educator. This research was conducted in two phases. Phase one interrogated the effectiveness of artists taking on dual roles as both artists and educators/teachers within international and New Zealand's educational programmes. This phase advocated for artists to embrace their original role as artists without the additional burdens of other roles. Moving to phase two, this research employed the method of document analysis to investigate the historical and current engagement of artists in students' museum education within the context of New Zealand. Historically, artists were considered as art technicians with no direct involvement in art teaching or creation. Although the current LEOTC and ELC programmes in New Zealand value artists' contributions to art education, they do not indicate artists' involvement in these two programmes. Drawing from the findings of phase one and two, the study proposed a novel model that emphasises the integration of three elements: learning environment (art museum), people (artists), and objects (artworks). This model suggested that the combined action of these three elements could lead to a transformation from teacher-led teaching to student-centred learning in art education. Such a transition held the potential to enrich students' educational experience through collaborative efforts between artists, museum educators, and schoolteachers, and also enhance students' interdisciplinary learning experiences.

Although adults are known to play an important role in young children's development, little work has focused on the enactive features of scaffolding in informal learning settings, and the embodied dynamics of intergenerational interaction. To address this gap, this paper undertakes a microinteractional analysis to examine intergenerational collaborative interaction in a science museum setting. The paper presents a fine-grained moment-by-moment analysis of video-recorded interaction of children and their adult carers around science-themed objects. Taking an enactive cognition perspective, the analysis enables access to subtle shifts in interactants' perception, action, gesture, and movement to examine how young children engage with exhibits, and the role adult action plays in supporting young children's engagement with exhibits and developing ideas about science. Our findings demonstrate that intergenerational "embodied scaffolding" is instrumental in making "enactive potentialities" in the environment more accessible for children, thus deepening and enriching children's engagement with science. Adult action is central to revealing scientific dimensions of objects' interaction and relationships in ways that expose novel types of perception and action opportunities in shaping science experiences and meaning making. This has implications for science education practices since it foregrounds not only "doing" science, through active hands-on activities, but also speaks to the interconnectedness between senses and the role of the body in thinking. Drawing on the findings, this paper also offers design implications for informal science learning environments.

Science museums are key locations for informal education. They also enable research that explores how families structure their activities and conversations and how these contribute to learning experiences. The aim of this exploratory study, using qualitative and quantitative methodologies, was to analyse the process of family interactions during visits to a Brazilian science museum focused on microbiology and how their conversations mediated their learning experiences. Four groups, each consisting of a single family with children, participated in the study. Their visits were recorded using a subjective camera, and the audiovisual data were analysed regarding types of interactions and conversational content, based on an analysis protocol. The results reveal that the interactions and social dynamics that family groups engaged in during their visit provided cognitive and social learning experiences. The study also offers evidence on the role of children, the importance of conversations with adults during the visits, and the relevance of objects on exhibition in promoting learning conversations.

This article describes a collaboration between the "Rubin Center" and my "Methods of Teaching Art" class and explores how constructivist practices support democratic citizenship and idea-based art education curriculum building. The collaboration came about as a revived attempt to expand the performance-based and experiential opportunities for preservice art educators. Underlying this project was the assumption that art curriculum building can and should be a creative act not only in tune with the practices and products of (studio or visual arts) making but also grounded within meaning-making practices that involve research and discussion. Within this collaboration lies the hope that we might deepen the experience of preservice teachers, and, through it, advance generations of children enrolled in the local public school programs these preservice teachers intend to serve.

The authors explored how art centers for people with disabilities -- a form of day program -- could collaborate with art museums to create inclusive and integrated programming with artists from the broader community. Museums are in a particularly salient period of a paradigm shift, becoming more socially responsive and considering audience engagement in terms of inclusion and diversity rather than simply numbers of visitors. Art centers for people with disabilities, which provide mentorship and exhibition opportunities, are often positioned within outsider art discourse. Critical pedagogy, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and constructivism undergirded the theoretical framework of the research project. Transformative possibilities abound when visitors with disabilities are centered in the design phase of art museum education programs.

The art of looking is a museum and art gallery teaching tool at the core of the Visual Thinking Strategies, a Harvard School of Education pedagogy initiated as an educational experiment for schools across the United States almost two decades ago. Today, a large number of schools implement this teaching method to increase student engagement in a non-hierarchical setting that promotes inclusive learning experiences. Students analyze works of art basic elements (colors, shapes, and textures) and complexities (meanings and intentions and ties to cultures and emotions) with an inquiry-based approach. Facilitators are central to the process, but not the authoritative source. At a moment in which racial inequality and injustice flood the media, anti-racist intentional teaching is necessary to produce social change. The discomfort generated by magnifying racism through the lens of art moves the participants to explore how racism can deeply shape social, political, and cultural institutions, acknowledging the root causes of racism and identifying the spaces that perpetuate segregation and discrimination on the basis of race beyond stereotypes. Rather than shying away from difficult issues, this pedagogy encourages the audience to address complex topics and combat social issues head-on. This article contains five essays that highlight the beauty of truthful young voices from a multidisciplinary, higher-education setting that call for racism awareness and action through the art of looking.

This literature review aims to characterise mediation practices in non-formal science education settings (zoos, aquariums, botanical gardens, science centres and museums) based on empirical studies published in the last 15 years and to evaluate their potential in providing visitors with an equitable and inclusive experience, considering their responsiveness. The literature analysis grouped the findings into three mediation models (educator-centred, visitor-centred, and exhibition-centred), characterised by educators' and visitors' roles, visit structures, and mediation actions. The review contributes to identifying mediation processes with flexible structures and interactive and dialogic communication approaches as responsive. Factors related to non-formal settings and educators influencing the educators' mediation model are also discussed. It is hoped that the framework emerging from this literature review will be useful for institutions and educators to evaluate the potential contributions of non-formal settings to science education, recognise the limitations of their mediation processes and commit to inclusion by moving towards a visitor-centred mediation model.

Science teacher leaders have been identified as an important lever for the implementation of science education reform. However, science reform implementation is locally controlled and not uniform across districts; therefore, the work of STLs within a reform context can vary. In this descriptive case study, we explore the work of 11 science teacher leaders who support science education reform in a variety of organizational contexts. Through the analysis of multiple data sources, we describe the roles that these science teacher leaders take up in their work and identified how variation in these roles related to localized contexts and priorities for science education. We identified seven roles that science teacher leaders enacted in their work: activist, ambassador, collaborator, innovator, networker, organizer, and translator. We found that each science teacher leader prioritized one or two of these roles in their work, with other roles supporting these primary roles. While most science teacher leaders named some aspect of collaborator, networker, and ambassador as part of their work, only the district-level science leaders named translator. Furthermore, there were important differences across the science teacher leaders in our sample, which related to their district and/or school contexts. We end with suggestions for leveraging the existing variation in the work of science teacher leaders for designing professional development including opportunities for science teacher leaders to surface the various roles they occupy in their work and to provide choice in professional learning based on those roles.

This article aims to provide insights of social justice awareness in young children's pretend play (2-6 years old) involving shopping activities in the nursery and the children's museum. Previous literature acknowledges the importance of grocery exhibits and relevant learning centres in the cognitive and socio-cultural development of children, but rarely addresses broader social justice issues. Educators' narratives were analyzed using the Capability Approach to examine how children's play experiences relate to Nussbaum's central human functional capabilities. Thematic analysis indicated that interactions associated with payment transactions and budgeting concepts, healthy eating and consumerism, as well as cooperation in running the shop were instrumental in facilitating social justice awareness and developing a great variety of the central human capabilities. The nursery environment seemed to enable a more agentic stance and a stronger understanding of social justice-related issues, while practitioners' prompts and an implicit pedagogical agenda towards active citizenship enriched play-based pedagogy with social justice objectives.

On 25 June 2021, the State Council issued the new "Outline of the National Action Scheme for Scientific Literacy for All Chinese Citizens (2020-2035) (Outline of Scientific Literacy)." In order to provide reference for its implementation, this study analyzes the achievements and obstacles in the implementation of the old "Outline of Scientific Literacy (2006-2010-2020)" based on the results of all previous surveys on civic scientific literacy (CSL) in China and from the perspective of science education. The results showed a continued steady growth in CSL, from 1.6 in 2005 to 10.56% in 2020. Specifically, male, urban, and younger adults were more likely to qualify as possessing CSL. Moreover, education level was found to be positively related to CSL. The study also found that in China, the effectiveness of formal science education has been hampered by the long-term division of the arts and sciences, examination-oriented education, the urban-rural gap, and the aging population. In terms of informal education, 37.2% of Chinese citizens visited science museums in 2020, and the Internet plays an increasing important role. Nowadays, Chinese science popularization lacks interaction, with limited opportunities for public engagement. There are deficiencies in both the country's formal and informal science education, meaning that there is still much room for improvement in the promotion of CSL in China.

Object-based learning includes the active incorporation of historic artifacts into educational environments, which may yield meaningful learning experiences. However, gaining access to artifacts and coordinating object-based curricula with museum staff pose immense challenges to educators. Furthermore, digital representations of historic artifacts are often removed from authentic, culturally-situated surroundings. By providing a system-level overview of a game currently under development titled "Kresy," this emerging technology report explains how video game affordances, particularly interactive narrative, may support object-based learning in digital environments. To support object-based learning and engagement with 20th-century Eastern European history, "Kresy" weaves story through evidence collection and inquiry mechanics. In presenting these design considerations, this report shows the viability of merging game- and object-based learning within an immersive virtual environment.

This study aims to reveal the effect of examining photos/documents in museums with traditional and STEM approach on students' success in history lesson, interest, attitude, national value and historical awareness. A control group pretestposttest trial model, which is one of the quantitative research methods, was used in the research. The study group of the research is 2nd year secondary school students. The study was carried out with a total of 60 students, 30 students in the experimental group and 30 students in the control group. The application of the study was carried out in a secondary school and museums in Almaty (Kazakhstan). In the research, four different measurement tools were applied to determine the effect of museum visit and STEM approach, which are independent variables, on students' success in history lesson, attitude, interest and national value and consciousness level. Whether there is a difference between the achievement, attitude, interest, national values and consciousness levels of the experimental and control groups was analyzed with the "Independent t test". According to the findings obtained from the research, it was determined that the museum tour and STEM application studies were more effective in increasing the success, attitudes and interests of the students in the history lesson than the classical narrative-based tour in the museum with the control group. It was observed that both methods were effective in students' national values and historical awareness.

With the work done in the process, it was tried to raise awareness about museums and to explain how valuable museums are for a new perspective on education and most importantly for the social studies course. In the study, a 2x2 split-plot mixed design was used. In the quantitative part of the study, dependent and independent variable measurements were made on the experimental and control groups. In the qualitative part, semi-structured interview technique was applied. The participants of the research are 50 7th grade students in a public school in the center of Gaziantep in the 2020-2021 academic year. The quantitative data of the study were analyzed with the SPSS 22.00 program, and the Shapiro-Wilk normality test and skewness calculation were performed to find answers to the research questions of the study. Afterwards, the post-test was applied to both groups. As a result of the research, it was determined that museum education, which is one of the out-of-school learning environments for the social studies course, improved the course success level of the students in the experimental group. In addition, the data obtained from the semi-structured interview form reveal important results in terms of revealing the students' thoughts on museum education and its impact and make our research more valuable.

The transmission of values through social studies education remains a central subject of interest. The search for alternative resources to foster and sustain this transmission process has recently intensified. 'Museums', recognized as alternative spaces within out-of-school learning contexts in social studies, are increasingly acknowledged as crucial in facilitating value transmission. This research seeks to elucidate the role of museums in this process, primarily through the perspectives of pre-service social studies teachers. The study employed qualitative research methods and was constructed within a case study design framework. Data collection relied on focus group discussions with the pre-sercive teachers, with the subsequent content analysis used for data interpretation and explanation. Through dialogues with the participants, it became apparent that the transmission of values in social studies, a fundamental course for life learning, was a predominant concern. Out-of-school learning experiences are deeply integrated with social studies due to their interdisciplinary and multifaceted nature. In light of this, the participants' perspectives and recommendations concerning the role of 'museums' as alternative venues for value transmission within the scope of social studies were predominantly positive.

This research article reports results of a study centered on an undergraduate instructor who facilitated a practice-based field experience with undergraduate preservice teachers (n=125) in an urban museum setting, working with middle school students with a public museum school. In addition to exploring this practice-based field experience, we also examined ways the setting functioned as a third space for teaching and learning. Also discussed are some of the changes the instructor made to maximize student learning in this third space. Results indicate that implementing practice-based learning in undergraduate education serves to extend and support teaching and learning. Moreover, practice-based learning experiences provide additional learning opportunities, including connecting undergraduates' chosen careers with professionals working in the field. The outcomes of this study also indicate that when implementing and facilitating practice-based learning opportunities there are some pedagogical shifts instructors will need to make, including increasing one's flexibility and adaptability as well as intentionally utilizing the additional third space(s) as text and teacher, when and where possible.

This qualitative study investigated perceptions of STSE topics manifested by adults visiting four biodiversity exhibits at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) in Toronto, Canada. Seven visitors were observed by researchers during their visits and completed post-visit interviews. The theoretical perspective on STSE relationships expounded by Pedretti and Nazir (2011) and Steele (2014) was adopted for the analysis portion of this investigation. Results indicate that the exhibits were able to communicate their central messages on the relationship between human beings and the natural world and the relationship between science and society, as well as reveal some of the effects that these messages had on the public. However, results also support the assertion that some of the intended STSE concepts were not perceived by the participants. Moreover, we identified limitations regarding adult visitors' abilities to perceive science and technology as human activities embedded in a social, historical and moral context.

This article is a qualitative investigation of teachers' pedagogical approaches to the terror attacks on September 11, 2001. The ten participants are regionally diverse in-service teachers who attended workshops conducted by the 9/11 Memorial Museum and Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History in New York during June and July, 2019. Teachers presented their 9/11 lessons at a March 5, 2020 conference in New York City to pre- and in-service teachers. Surveys, interviews, and lessons determined how teachers implemented professional development in their schools. The paper seeks to improve teacher training through the use of primary sources and place-based education to engender student inquiry. The creation of 9/11 digital lesson plans on the Library of Congress' Teaching with Primary Sources site provides teachers access to ensure that 9/11 receives greater emphasis in the social studies curriculum. Findings indicate that in-situ, place-based experiences increased 9/11 curriculum in classrooms.

This article reports a local study of the presence of history as a subject in the kindergartens of Kristiansand, a municipality in southern Norway. There is no syllabus for history in the national curriculum; nevertheless, the research sought to find historical content in the kindergartens. The research method was informed by a precept of history didactics, namely that history is everywhere. Using this observation, tentative categories for content likely to feature history were formulated, and then searched for in the individual yearly plans of the kindergartens. This was supplemented by interviews. It is concluded that, in accordance with the national curriculum, history in the kindergartens is a local affair. It emerges especially through local history, visits to museums, and projects with historical features. This research was not designed to determine whether learning outcomes in history are achieved, nor to consider kindergartens outside Kristiansand. However, it references a corpus of literature on history in Norwegian kindergartens, and interacts with it. The conclusion about the presence of the subject is the same as was found for another city, Trondheim, in research by others. For international readers, the article also argues that in principle it is possible for young children to learn history orally and informally.

Background and Aim: Promoting the development of international education is an important international education trend in the world today. It has had or is having a far-reaching impact on the education of all countries in the world, whether it is formal education or non-formal education (Gu, M., 2020). The "Course Plan for Technicians in Museums and Exhibition Halls" is mentioned in the book "Classification of International Education Standards" prepared by the UNESCO Education Statistics Bureau (1998). It can be seen that as early as the initial stage of international education development, the international education undertakings responsible for education, cultural inheritance, and exchange have attracted long-term attention to the museum industry. The combination of international education and museum display education can develop the way of international education, improve the exchange channels of international education, use the intuition and authenticity of museum display education, and improve the communication channels and paths of Chinese culture, which is an important way to improve the soft power of modern countries. Materials and Methods: This study uses descriptive research methods and attribute classification methods to try to classify garden cultural relics. The descriptive research method is simple. It interprets existing phenomena, laws, and theories through its understanding and verification, raises questions in a targeted way, and reveals the drawbacks. The law of attribute classification takes the social and scientific and cultural attributes of cultural relics as the standard to classify cultural relics. That is, the classification method is based on the nature of cultural relics. Cultural relics are the relics of human social activities and have cultural attributes. Therefore, when using the attribute classification method, this study clarifies the use and deep meaning of cultural relics to accurately confirm their nature, and then carry out research. Results: The development of international education is the evolution trend of education for the world and the public. Make good use of the current museum public service facilities education platform to build good communication and communication channels, which is conducive to the development of international education. Conclusion: Based on the existing collection classification principles and characteristics, we will innovate the classification display method, make new attempts to improve the classification display education method, and build a collection classification system in line with the functional positioning, collection attributes, and development planning of the library. It is a useful attempt to combine international education with museum education and museum classification to improve the mode of museum education, implement the essence of the curriculum plan of international education development museums and exhibition halls into specific practical work, and enrich the content of museum education through new exhibition classification.

The general purpose of this research is to examine the objects in the Güzelyurt Archeology and Nature Museum in the context of museum education. Answers to the following questions were sought: which archeological objects are in this museum in line with this general purpose? Can these objects be used in museum education activities in line with the learning outcomes of the lessons taught in the primary school level of the basic education program? In order to collect the data of the research, document analysis method was used. First the learning outcomes of 8 courses in the basic education program were examined. Then, the archaeological objects in the Güzelyurt Archeology and Nature Museum were classified and evaluated according to their characteristics and ages. It is envisaged that 82 archaeological objects belonging to the Neolithic, Ceramic Neolithic, Chalcolithic, Early Bronze, Middle Bronze, Late Bronze, Geometric, Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic and Roman Ages can be used within the scope of museum education.

Language difficulties can be a problem for foreign students studying in Hungary: they see as Hungarians do not speak foreign languages, which hinders the well-being of foreigners. At the same time, students studying at Hungarian universities also have different cultural expectations: it is important for them to gain cultural experiences, expand their knowledge of Hungarian culture and history. Classical public cultural institutions, such as museums, can be perfect places to learn about the culture and history of a country. The aim of this study is to introduce our research findings whether foreigner students studying at the University of Szeged have to face these problems. Our goal is to find out how important it is to them to get to know Hungarian culture, and whether they think about museums from this point of view and what kinds of language barriers do they have. In our study, we present the results of focus group research with foreign students studying at the University of Szeged. The results show that the students who took part in the research had language difficulties in Hungary which has affected their knowledge of Hungarian culture and history. They do not usually go to museums to gain more information but they think museums can be great places for this purpose although the students have problems with museums' multilingual aspects. We have come to the conclusion that foreign students are interested in Hungarian culture but the language barriers are building walls between them and the museums.

This design case explores the design of a learning framework at a museum. Specifically, the case explores the development of learning practices (LPs) for an arts-based learning space and uses these practices to explain and design for learning and deepening engagement. These LPs represent a means for developing a common language across studio educators for the kinds of learning and engagement they sought to support in the museum Art Studio. This framework aligns with the mission and vision of the museum, and the development process helped form the team's common language. In all, this work contributes to research on educator professional teams as well as works attempting to articulate what it means to engage in arts-based learning within a museum setting.
